Juan Sánchez

BiographyNació en el seno de una familia puertorriqueña que emigró a los Estados Unidos. Desde temprana edad su madre le inculcó su identidad puertorriqueña, tema recurrente en su obra. Asistió a la Escuela Superior de Arte y Diseño en Manhattan, Nueva York. En 1977, recibió su Bachillerato en Bellas Artes de Cooper Union, East Village, Manhattan, N.Y., y en 1980 una Maestría en Bellas Artes de Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, Brunswick, New Jersey. Estuvo en contacto con el grupo de activistas, Young Lords; y participó en el Taller Boricua en Este de Harlem. Desde 1980 Sánchez ha expresado a través de su arte, su convicción sobre la libertad de Puerto Rico, la lucha contra la opresión política, la emancipación espiritual y social de su gente. Actualmente Sánchez se desempeña como Artista y Profesor de Arte en el Departamento de Art e Historia del Arte, Hunter, The City University of New York, N.Y. Ha obtenido los siguientes reconocimientos: George A. & Eliza Garder Howard Foundation Fellowship, Brown University; John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship 1988; John Mitchell Foundation; Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant 2001, 2007; New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship 1988, 1992, 2003 y National Endowment for the Arts.
